Kevin R. Culhane engages in a practice emphasizing litigation, along with significant academic and State Bar responsibilities. His practice includes the following:

  • Trials of complex cases in the fields of professional liability, products liability, title insurance and bad faith defense;
  • Significant appellate and administrative law cases; and
  • Alternative dispute resolution, including arbitrations, mediations and specially set settlement conferences.

Mr. Culhane's professional activities also encompass:

  • Twenty-nine years as Professor of Law, University of the Pacific, McGeorge School of Law, Sacramento, emphasizing advanced torts, insurance law and professional responsibility;
  • Former member of the Board of Governors of the State Bar of California, representing 14 Northern and Central California counties; Vice President, State Bar of California. During his tenure, he was primarily responsible for revamping California's attorney discipline system, with the resulting agency being hailed as a model for the nation. In addition, Mr. Culhane has served on the Professional Standards Committee of the State Bar and the Commission on Judicial Nominees Evaluations;
  • Former member of the Judicial Council of California, which has oversight responsibility for all aspects of California's court system (1989-1994). In 1994, the Council conferred its Distinguished Service Award on Mr. Culhane;
  • 1989-2003 co-chair, State Bar Committee on Professional Liability Insurance. In 2003 the State Bar of California recognized Mr. Culhane's ongoing service in conferring its Outstanding Contribution Award;
  • Former member of the Commission on the Future of the Legal Profession; Chair, Subcommittee on Disciplinary Regulation; and
  • Former member, Judicial Council of California Committee on Alternative Dispute Resolution.

Mr. Culhane received his Juris Doctor degree in 1976 (with great distinction) from the University of the Pacific, McGeorge School of Law. He was Editor-in-Chief of the Pacific Law Journal. In 1977, Mr. Culhane received a Master of Laws degree from Stanford Law School.

Mr. Culhane commenced his career as an associate attorney with the law firm of Matsui & Hansen. Following the election of Robert T. Matsui to the United States Congress, Mr. Culhane joined with Hartley T. Hansen and established the practice now known as Hansen, Culhane, Kohls, Jones & Sommer, LLP. Since that time, Mr. Culhane has been an active principal in the firm as well as a professor at McGeorge School of Law.

Mr. Culhane has authored numerous publications and has been a regular contributor to numerous legal publications. He is the published author of the leading academic text on Advanced Torts. In 1987, he published his text on California discovery practice under contract to the James Publishing Company, Santa Ana, California; the second edition was published in August 1997. He has lectured regularly for the Committee on Continuing Legal Education of the State Bar of California and the Northern California Association of Defense Counsel on topics dealing with all aspects of tort and professional liability practice.

Mr. Culhane is rated "A-V" by Martindale-Hubbell, the national legal directory. This is the highest rating, which Martindale-Hubbell confers for both legal ability and professionalism. He is a member of the State Bar of California, the Sacramento County Bar Association and numerous other legal and civic organizations.
